Equine Therapy Fund for Child Abuse Victims

In collaboration with Peace Ranch, we’re offering survivors of child abuse a powerful path to recovery through equine therapy.

When Words Aren’t Enough

Every year, children across Northern Michigan endure the trauma of abuse. And while the forensic interview is a crucial first step toward justice, it doesn’t address the emotional wounds left behind. Many young survivors struggle with fear, anxiety, isolation, and emotional dysregulation that traditional therapy alone can’t always reach.

For children whose trauma runs too deep for words, healing requires more than conversation. It requires a connection that’s gentle, nonverbal, and safe.

Healing Through Equine Assisted Therapy

In partnership with Peace Ranch, Traverse Bay Children’s Advocacy Center offers a unique, trauma-informed approach to healing: equine-assisted therapy.

At Peace Ranch, children are paired with calm, responsive horses in a natural, peaceful setting. Guided by licensed therapists, they engage in activities like grooming, leading, and simply being present with the animals, building trust, self-regulation, and emotional awareness in the process.

Research shows that equine therapy helps reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD. For many of our clients, it’s where the healing truly begins.

Real Outcomes, Real Healing

Since launching our partnership with Peace Ranch, the results have been nothing short of transformative. Every child referred to the program has not only participated but shown measurable emotional and relational growth.

  • 100% of participants engaged in therapy

  • 100% improved emotional regulation

  • 100% showed improved relationships at home and in school

  • 100% of clients with suicidal ideation reported reduced risk

  • 100% of children with developmental concerns made progress

This isn’t just therapy. It’s a life-changing intervention, and it’s working.

Elizabeth Carrillo, TBCAC Director of Clinical Services:

"We recognized a need to provide alternative healing options for our clients and Peace Ranch's equine therapy program was the answer. This partnership has been invaluable and has truly helped TBCAC support child survivors in the best way possible. I've seen how a child's healing journey has been dramatically impacted by this program. The transformations clients have experienced can't quite be captured in words, but the trusting relationships these children are able to make with the horses and staff at Peace Ranch are inspiring.”
